Why does my Video Card erratically fan itself every few seconds?

I have an ATI Radeon X1800 xt video card and it seems like it has sufficient cooling. Everytime I play a game, after awhile, it starts to erratically fan itself.. It will blast the fan for a few seconds, then go back down to normal speed. It starts to make the game hiccup in places where it shouldn't. I get awesome framerates in between these few jolts every once in awhile. It should be functioning much better, it was a $400 card. Any ideas?|||it sounds like the 'normal' fan speed is insufficent to cool the cards cpu, and when it reaches a high enough temp, the fan kicks-up a notch, but the card is already in trouble....you may need add'l cooling inside your Tower.|||Open up the case and blast the fan with compressed air. If that doesn't help, reinstall your video drivers.|||Without knowing about your OS, processor speed, memory and so on, I would suggest maybe going to the ATI website and seeing if they have an updated driver or patch for your particular graphics card and operating system.

You might also check to see if there is a message board on the ATI website that addresses this particular issue. Perhaps other users are experiencing the same problem and they may have a solution that may suit your needs.
